Growing up I didn't have to go far to be exposed to art. My mother
was a professional portrait painter, working often at home in our dining
room, and my father was a professional photographer in addition to being
the head of the English department at St. George's school. I was encouraged
from an early age to indulge my inclination toward drawing, and taught
how to take pictures and develop and print the results. I attended St.George's,
where I came under the tutelage of the art teacher, Richard Grosvenor.
I had already known him as a colleague of my father's and a friend of
the family, and we quickly developed a warm teacher-student relationship.
After going through the art courses offered in the school curriculum
we made up our own; basically he became my tutor. We would go out painting
in his van or outside as weather allowed, and I remember several museum
trips to Boston and Providence.
